Baby blanket

This is my second start on this blanket (using KnitPicks Merino Style). It started out as a Big Bad Baby blanket variant, but then I got bored. A couple of baby sweaters I made recently (which I'll post once they're finished) were done in stockinette. I'm tired of stockinette.

So I changed the red panel to Berry stitch from Walker's Second Treasury. It's hard to see the detail in this photo, but it looks really cute. About 30 rows in however, I found that the stockinette/reverse stockinette sections were too stiff to work well with the Berry stitch. Arrgh.

After a few evenings of head pounding, I found a scarf pattern in Odd Ball Knitting (a gift from the SO's sister) done in Bamboo rib. It produces a flexible yet dense fabric that contrasts nicely with the berries. I'll post updates once I switch to the next colour set.

Cute! But you were warned that the Big Bad Baby Blanket is all about the seed stitch... I hate seed stitch in large quantities.. drives me batty.

A question about the merino style DK weight yarn from KnitPicks, does it truly knit up to 21 sts/4 in on US 6 needles? If it's true, it'll be a reasonable susbstitute for the Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool...

It was the stockinette that did me in though...

I got a gauge of 24 1/2 sts/4 in flat stockinette on US 5 (from the baby sweaters) after cold water blocking. I can knit up a gauge swatch on 6's if you're willing to wait a day or so.

Is flat stockinette and cold water blocking OK?

Cool... You'll knit me a swatch! Your the best flight instructor in the galaxy! Don't eorry about blocking though... The gauge of Silky Wool is 22 sts/4 in on US 6 needles... Wanna send me the left over scraps you don't know what to do with? Also, since you seem to be knitting for a lot of babies, I saw a cute pair of easy garter-stitch baby booties in the Debbie Bliss baby book. Super cute and super fast, probably good for DK weight
or sock weight yarn.

Awww - you're welcome. The Bliss books are nice, but there's also Erika Knight and Last-Minute Knitted Gifts.

On to gauge business: my unblocked swatch yielded 22 st/4 in.

I have to say that overall, I'm happy with the merino style (not that I've put it through a Knitter's review-style wear & tear test yet). It's soft, the colours are great and out of the 8 balls I've knitted through only 1 had a knot. It fuzzed a little with the frogging on the blanket, but it's not very noticible in the knitted fabric.

I was thinking of making the knitty kitty when the blanket is done if there's enough leftovers. If you'd like the leftovers after that, I'll pack 'em up and send them your way.
